Maintaining Your CIAO Designation
The IPAI requires that all active CIAO's complete 60 hours of designation maintenance education over a 4 year cycle. If you fail to complete maintenance hours, your designation will expire.
Cycle 1: 2011-2014 -- Cycle ended on December 31, 2014
Cycle 2: 2015-2018 -- Current cycle ends December 15, 2018
Cycle 3: 2019-2022
Cycle 4: 2023-2026
Once you are a CIAO, you may take courses through the IPAI, Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR), the International Association of Assessing Officers (IAAO), or other IDOR approved educational organizations to maintain your designation. If you take a course from a provider other than the IPAI, you are responsible for reporting that course to us via your online profile. Individuals who are elected, appointed, or contracted must also complete requirements set forth in 35 ILCS 200/2-45 and 35 ILCS 200/3-5.
Two big changes to the Illinois Department of Revenue education program begin January 1, 2016! First, you will no longer need to meet level and category requirements. This means you'll be able to take the classes that are most interesting to you and most relevant to your work. You'll also be allowed to repeat courses you took ten or more years ago. This applies to any course approved for continuing education credit.
The Illinois Department of Revenue's, Adrianne Bailey, explains the upcoming changes and what they mean for you.
